IG Quiltfest 2022: Day 3

Quilts on Beds

What quilt(s) do you have on the beds in your house right now? If you’re an Average Quilter, chances are you have at least one quilt on at least one bed. Me? I have two quilts on my bed right now because it’s kind of cold. When it’s really cold, I’ll add a third… and maybe a thermal blanket too! We don’t tend to use our heater very much. Energy costs are pretty high so having a few quilts around comes in handy.

For those who don’t know, I get up suuuuuper early in the morning. I’m usually up around 5:30 am, which is when I do a good portion of my IG posting. So this prompt, which asked us to take a photo of the quilts on our beds was not going to happen without me waking my sweet husband up, making the bed, tidying around it, fixing the lighting. Can you say nope?

Dragons Quilt by Jason Yenter

So, I dug through my photos on Facebook to find the last quilt I took a photo of on my bed, and found this one! It was made from a quilt kit with a couple different panels and coordinating fabric, all by Jason Yenter of In the Beginning Fabrics. I first saw it hanging in a quilt shop during a shop hop I went on last year. It was custom quilted and had a total wow factor. Unfortunately, the cost of the kit was outside my budget for that shop hop.

A couple weeks went by, and I kept thinking about that kit! I called the shop and learned that they were sold out, so I went to Etsy, and found a seller who was selling it for a very good price. It arrived quickly, and I dove in. And then, my recurring theme appeared: I mis-cut one of the panels. I’d been so careful with measuring and marking, but alas…

I searched for just the panel I needed, but couldn’t find it in the colorway I needed for anything approaching a reasonable price, until I found a seller on Amazon of all places. I ordered the panel, it took awhile to arrive (no Prime shipping with them, but the price was great and included free shipping). I opened the package, and found the wrong panel! Nooooo!!!! It was Dinosaurs instead of Dragons. I contacted the seller, they told me to keep the wrong panel and they’d send the right panel to me. I appreciate their great customer service.

Then it came time to cut the sashing, which is when I discovered that the fabric was printed crooked. I did my best and reminded myself that finished is better than perfect. After that it was easy to put together, even with the mitered corners on the outer border. I sent it to Southern Whimsy Quilts for quilting, and got it back a few weeks later. And now, I regularly sleep under it because it’s an awesome quilt.

Here are some pictures of it freshly quilted and bound:
