IG Quiltfest 2022: Day 1

Good morning, Average Quilters! If you’re a quilter on Instagram, you may begin to see posts about the IG Quiltfest using #igquiltfest2022. This is hosted by Amy’s Creative Side in March every year, and includes a bunch of prompts. If you’re not already participating, I encourage you to do so – or at least look for the posts. I’m always amazed by the number of quilters out there, and the beautiful work they create! And, if you can only post for a few of them, do that. Something is better than nothing.

Since Instagram has a character limit on its captions, I’m pretty limited in what I can say. That’s probably a good thing, because I can be quite wordy. I thought I might expand on Amy’s prompts in this blog. it’ll help you guys get to know me a bit better, and give me something to talk about. Win-win!

Today’s IG Quiltfest 2022 post is all about introductions, so here it is:

My name is Danielle, but some people call me Danie. My husband always calls me Beautiful. Certain family members call me D or Sho. One of my staff calls me Dee-Dub (because my initials are DW). I’ve also been known to answer to “hey you.” Ha!

I’ve been a quilter for over 20 years. My sister taught me to quilt when I was 18 or 19, I think. It’s hard to remember that far back. I made a couple quilts, and then had to take a break to go back to school. While on that break, I got a BA in Liberal Studies with a focus on South Asian (Indian) History, and then a Masters in Library and Information Science. I went to school full time, worked full time, and was my mom’s primary caregiver… so there literally wasn’t time to quilt. Now, I’m able to spend time quilting every day and finish at least 1 quilt a month, usually more than that.

My IG mostly has pictures of quilts in various stages of completion. You’ll see lots of pics of my dogs too. There’s travel photos, food photos, other projects, and of course, my husband and friends will sometimes show up too! All of these things play a big role in my life because even though I’m Just an Average Quilter, quilting isn’t the only thing I do or the only thing that matters. When I’m not quilting, I’m a library manager, wife, dog mom, traveler, baby cross stitcher, Etsy shop owner, blogger, occasional exerciser, foodie, and I randomly enjoy a cigar and whiskey on my porch.

My husband and I have been together since high school. One of the first pictures we ever took together is in the gallery below. He still makes my heart sing! We go to Las Vegas a lot – it’s one of my favorite places to visit, so of course I included a picture of us after a night out. We were tired and a lot happy.

We also enjoy trips to Disneyland and Disney World. The rope bridge photo below is from a backstage tour at Animal Kingdom. They attach you to a harness and then have you go over a river that has actual, live crocodiles in it. I’m already scared of heights. Add in the (itty bitty) chance of dying a horrible death if you fall… and man, I was scared. My answer was to laugh and hold on tight.

My pups are Tuli and Niner, both are rescues. When we adopted Tuli, she was fearful of a lot of things but has definitely come out of her shell. Fun fact: the shelter named her Tulip, but forgot the P when they put her name into the database and that’s how she became Tuli (pronounced Too-lee). Tuli loves blankets, especially quilts. Luckily I have some quilts made that are “safe” for dog use.

Niner was originally adopted by my brother. After he was evicted, he couldn’t find a place that would allow him to have a large dog, so Niner came to stay with us. She’s 17 and has super senior dog status. Even though she has a heart murmur, arthritis, and dementia, she’s doing really well, still and is happy. Niner hangs out with me in my sewing room and keeps me on schedule. She hates getting her picture taken, so most of the pictures on my IG are of Tuli.

Here are some photos for you to peruse:

So that’s it…. that’s me! I’d love it if you join in with IG Quiltfest 2022 – and I’ll see you on the next post!
