Really? Pillows?
Y’all… I must have gone crazy. It’s the only explanation.
Joann Fabrics was having a sale. I don’t even know why I was looking at their website. It’s not like they’re my go-to fabric store, and to be honest, their website is pretty terrible.
Either way, I was on Joann’s site. I noticed they were having a sale on the batting I like. And somehow I noticed that they were also having a sale on pillow forms.
I remembered that my living room pillows are starting to get gross and flat, which totally makes sense because we’ve had them for 6 or 7 years. They’ve been used for napping, lounging, and straight up sleeping. The dogs have laid on them too. They needed replacing 2 years ago, but like so may other things, I put it off.
Grand Plans
OK, so I decided to go ahead and buy pillow forms. My idea was that I would just take some orphaned blocks, quilt them up, and turn them into pillow covers. Or, I could follow a pattern and make a block specifically to turn into a pillow cover. Those blocks are all kinds of different sizes, so of course I would need a bunch of different sizes of pillow forms, right?
The little voice in the back of my head was telling me “Wait! Slow down! Think about this logically!” Did I listen? If I had, there wouldn’t be a blog post right now, now would there?
The little voice said “If you’re going to switch the covers out with each season, what will you do if you don’t have a seasonal/coordinating pillow cover? Where will you store that pillow?” I stubbornly ignored it.
The little voice said “Do you even like to make pillow covers? Haven’t you made, like, 2 of them and only 1 looked halfway decent?” Well, yeah, but you don’t get better at something by not doing it, and these pillow forms give me the perfect excuse!
Isn’t it amazing how stubborn we can be?
I wanted pretty new pillows.
I can (theoretically) make pillow covers.
I added pillow forms to my shopping cart.
I completed the purchase.
My, What a Big Box You Have!
I don’t know why I thought that 10 pillows (or whatever crazy amount I bought) would be delivered in a modest sized box. I guess picturing something’s size isn’t my strong suit, especially when I don’t have anything to reference it to.
If I said “Hey! How big of a box will these 10 pillows come in?” You’d probably have trouble too! At least that’s what I’m telling myself so that I don’t feel quite so ridiculous.
The box is so big that it took up almost my entire front porch when it was delivered. Ignore the lamp and vase in this clip art, and look for a second at the scale of the box to the people. That’s how big the box of pillow forms is.
Yes, “is”.
I opened the box, became overwhelmed, closed the box, and shoved it into the corner of my living room where it has sat for almost a month.
It’s been there long enough that I use it as a table for non-food/beverage items.
Ridiculous.
Wasteful.
I Need a Plan
Every time I look at that box, I feel guilty. So it’s time to do something about it and put those pillow forms to use.
So here’s the plan:
After this set of scrap quilt tops is done being pieced, and I’ve completed the baby quilt for my Mother in Law to gift to her coworker, I will make at least one pillow cover for a pillow form in the box. When I put that new pillow out, I will remove an old one and cannibalize the stuffing for dog beds.
There. That’s it. Sounds easy right? So why am I all anxious about it?
Well, that’s a tomorrow question. For now it’s time for bed. Sleep well and sweet dreams Average Quilters!
